This is probably going to be the most boring, geekiest and self indulgent review I'll ever do. Boring; because it's a hi hat clutch, everyone knows how it works what it looks like, whats to tell? Geeky; because I'm writing about a hi hat clutch. Self indulgent; because I like "boring geeky things" and you probably don't...
So here it is, my review of one of my favourite drum products.
Build.
The DW clutch is extremely well built. Made from steel it's heavy enough to feel secure and has a "classic" look about it, something I think DW does extremely well; bringing classic elements of drum design to the modern day without butchering the original.
The most impressive thing (and something which is available in other brands of hi hats stands I would hasten to add) about the DW clutch is the t-rod and allan key securing element at the bottom of the clutch. I was worried at first, as I was expecting it to be in contact with the bottom cymbal too much, but it's absolutely fine.
Playing.
Although there isn't too much to say about the playing aspect of a clutch, the DW has one major advantage over it's competition. As it has the security of the t-rod underneath the clutch it will never loosen. Too many times have I been playing and between songs I have to adjust my hi hat as something has slipped.
So any jazz comping where you need to keep constant time with your hi hat is great as you never have to worry about it moving!
Verdict.
I know this is a surprisingly short review... But there isn't much to say for a product that really does everything you expect it to. Just don't be too upset when you unknowingly leave it at the Hoxton bar and grill...
