#13 - Unlucky for some?

Video number 13 is now up! Although unlucky for some, video 13 marks my time in a new band, but more on that later...

Great Escape 2011

So Great Escape 2011 came and went.

The event always conjures up great memories of past years; Noissettes on Theatre Royal balcony, Foals, The Maccabees biggest Brighton gig to date etc etc. Although TGE hadn't met any of it's past glories this year, it was none the less fairly enjoyable for £35. I could moan a lot about the organisation of said event but what fun would that be?

What would be fun, and as this is a drumming blog, would be to mention some amazing drummers I saw over the weekend. In no certain order I give you:

Matt Thomas from The Joy Formidable.

Incredible performance from a highly infectious drummer. Smiling throughout his entire set whilst whacking incredibly hard and maintaining a strong Bonham groove. I think he used his Hi-hats once? A good thing in my book. Everyone loves toms!

Daniel Maiden-Wood from Anna Calvi

Daniel M-W played a very tasteful set that showed a very mature touch and sound. For a band that doesn't have a bassist he filled the sound with some really bass heavy tom and bass patterns. One of my favourites at the moment.

Mathias Sørensen from treefight for sunlight

The blurb from TGE compared treefight for sunlight to Brian Wilson which is great but I was slightly dubious when Mathias Sørensen actually looked like a 1960's Dennis Wilson... All the doubt subsided when they played a tight multi vocal set, with the sticks man singing lead as much as the "proper" front men. All this without missing a beat.

???? from Worship.

I knew nothing about Worship when I saw them on Saturday morning, to be honest I was very tired and couldn't really be bothered about seeing any more bands. But amongst a lot of music that seemed similar Worship sounded exciting and had an amazing groove in a shoe gaze/dance way. The drummer (name anyone?) gave what could be fairly standard drumming some really inventive beats.

Youtube comments #7

So my week long Youtube comments extravaganza has come to an end, as I'm writing this I feel that I have to come to some conclusion like; "Youtube users that comment are slightly unhinged" or "They should really check their spelling"...

But the most popular comment (and it really comes as no surprise) is the "Travis Barker, Joey Jordison trolling" comment. Nearly every video I watched had someone comparing it to their aforementioned alternative drumming idols... I really hope the majority of it is tongue in cheek...

Anyway I leave you with these pearls of wisdom:

In response to; the best drummer ever

"MOAR COWBELL!"

In response to; Dylan Elise, World's greatest drummer? 1/4

"this is travis barker smack everything u see n it sounds amazin"

In response to; BEST DRUMMERS OF ALL TIME!!!

"fucking waste of time... this is YOUR list not the real list!"

I would like to interject at this point and although I have no proof, I can confirm that the "real" list doesn't exist.

Good day/Bad hands

I'll wrap up the Youtube comments saga soon... It's been a bank holiday you know!

In the meantime have a look at my hands, it was a good audition...

Over and out.
